The Parents’ Program, using an intensive strengths-based approach works with over 30 families in the following ways:
Family Home Visits
Early Family Educators visit the familie's homes on a regular basis to provide one to one support. The goal is to assist and teach families to provide the best possible care for their children through support, information, role modeling and referrals to other community resources. Strategies that support positive parenting and build secure attachments are utilized.
Headstart parents participate in bi-weekly parenting groups and quarterly parent workshops. These groups are designed to assist parents to increase their knowledge in child development and child safety while providing positive parenting tools to build a secure and loving relationship. One specific program offered to parents is Triple P, an eight week positive parenting course.
Headstart parents participate twice a month in the classrooms with their child. Days-In gives parents an opportunity to engage in quality time with their child and learn the strengths and challenges their child is presently experiencing. The parents and their child’s teacher work as partners to assist each child to achieve personal developmental goals, thus develop to their potential.
The Parents’ Program team is available to all Headstart families in times of distress. Early Family Educators provide immediate support to families that have identified themselves as “in crisis”. This team works with the families to resolve the crisis through emotional support, information and referrals to help families meet their basic needs.
All Headstart families are screened and referred by the Dept. of Public Health.
